Pet Sitter or Boarding? What Is Best for Your Pet?

Durack Pet Motel often have new clients coming in to visit with us to try to determine what choice to make that will best suit their pets.

It’s a fact that sometimes you need to go away for a day, a week or more and you simply can’t take your furry friend with you.

So what choices do you have? You could employ the services of a pet sitter. Someone who will come to your home once or twice a day to feed and exercise your much loved four-legged friend. They will also take care of litter if it’s for a cat and offer some genuine contact to cats and dogs alike.

You could ask a friend, neighbour, or family member to do the same thing if you have explicit trust or are lucky enough to have someone close by in case they are needed in a hurry.

You could employ the services of an experienced boarding kennel that actually takes care of other people’s pets the same way we would like our pets to be cared for and loved.

Choosing the Solution that Best Suits Your Pet

For some pets, they prefer to be left at home and actually don’t mind the solitude that being left at home alone can bring. This can be especially true with cats that tend to be loners.

This is not so for very social cats and may not be the right choice for most dogs either. You will know what your pets prefer by observing their reactions to other pets. Dogs especially thrive on interaction with their fellow butt sniffers!

Perhaps your pet has some behavioural issues that preclude it from spending time with other pets. In these situations you may find that leaving them at home is the best choice. Others, however, may suffer from being left alone for long periods of time. Suddenly solitude becomes loneliness.

Loneliness can lead to boredom and bad behaviour. You may come home and find your prize roses have been dug up or your neighbours are ready to lynch you because your dog barked the whole time you were gone!

Another consideration may be your pet’s health and age. Does your four legged companion require medication to be administered? Our staff members are fully trained to deal with any and all medical situations, be they current or emergency.

Just like people, animals can have individual likes and needs. If you know your pet well, the choice can be easy.
